Over the soulless multiplex? Spend your summer (especially the weekend of June 24 to 26) at the Guthrie Theater for a cheap cultural treat.
During those dates, the renowned establishment will be less expensive than aforementioned movie houses. The Guthrie will be celebrating its fifth anniversary in the Jean Nouvel-designed building.
Whatever you feel of the Endless Bridge and the Endless Escalators, you can take advantage with $5 promotions. (Even if you missed this awesome costume party.)
Here are options:
Advance tickets: During the celebration weekend, buy a full-priced ticket to select performances of God of Carnage or H.M.S. Pinafore (6/30, 7/1, 7/6, 7/8 evening and 7/9 matinee) and receive a second ticket for $5. You do have to go in-person to the box office.
Rush: For those same shows, there will be 50 rush tickets available on June 24, 25 and 26 one hour before the performance. Limit two per person and cash or check only.
Tour: For $5 (see the pattern?), get a look behind the curtain at how the shows are produced. It’s 45 minutes of cultural and architectural history. The “Anniversary Special” deal is good for the 10 a.m. tours on June 24 through 26 and you can reserve by calling the box office at 612-377-2224.
Shop: Miss the winter? Get a $5 snow globe in the Guthrie store. For a the price of a Lincoln, you can also get the hardcover book “The Guthrie Theater: Images, History and Inside Stories.”
Eat: A $5 Happy Hour menu ($5 burgers, fish sandwiches, wine, Prairie Vodka and Jameson cocktails and $3 Grain Belt Premiums) will be served all day during the June 24 to 26 celebration.
