Fashion Comes Back Around

November 11, 2010 by IamMoody

I will admit it, I am a nerd. I did spend my Sunday evening watching Chiller’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s marathon. While I was doing this, I noticed something rather interesting. I noticed leggings, cute dresses and current hairstyles. I noticed that she was dressed just like the women are dressed today, and I was rather interested. This was proof of what people have been saying for years!

Fashion does come back around. Although Buffy the Vampire Slayer was never known as being a fashionable show, they did always keep Buffy in the range of acceptable and current fashions. They did make sure that her hair was done in the fashionable styles and that her outfits were both cute, age appropriate and higher end. There were also several very fashionable girls on the show that give a very accurate depiction of high fashion in California and the rest of the United States at the time.

buffy the vampire slayerAlthough fashions are thought to come around every thirty, there is a difference in the time between different fashions. Generally, it is considered to be every generation or so. Buffy’s show was only 13 years ago, considerably faster than the average fashion generation. This may be because of the recession or the decreased time between generations. Either way, the fashions are back.

What did I notice that was so familiar? The leggings. Yeah, when they came out, everyone mentioned how they looked like the familiar leggings of the 1990’s, but no one was able to mention a popular show that featured them. Well, Buffy definitely has the same leggings as the women are wearing now. In addition, the slouching sweaters and boots were the rage then, and they are the rage now.

Next time you see a marathon from the 1990’s, watch it. See if you don’t notice the same outfits being worn from that era to this era. It is rather amusing to see what we looked like then, and then compare how the kids of today are dressing and how the adults are dressing. You night just see what I see.

Five Places You Don’t Have To Tip (But They Ask You To!)

November 11, 2010 by IamMoody

I know that there are certain situations where you should tip. Places like restaurants where you are getting served by a server who makes far less than minimum wage and requires gratuity to make ends meet. Or venues like a bar, pub or club, where you generally tip a buck per drink, as the bartenders and servers/cocktail waitresses get paid jack at such establishments as well. However, what really grinds my gears are other places, where the employees are compensated at least minimum wage, and they think that they can get more money out of you by placing a tip jar on the counter.

It really does get me unnerved, because these people could easily go out and find a higher paying job, they just settled for less. Now Peter and Mary are expected to tip them because they want more money? Um, News Flash: If you make at least minimum wage, then you don’t get tipped in my book. That’s because the other people in the industry need those tips to survive, because they get paid like two bucks per hour! So here are five places where you DON’T need to ever tip…but they would sure like you to!

Starbucks and Most Coffee Shops: Okay, so you order a white chocolate mocha in the large size and then add some whip cream. For about 12 ounces of coffee you are expected to shell out nearly $7 or more. Then they have the audacity to try and get a tip from you. Yeah right. These people are making at least minimum wage.

Pizza Parlors that Serve by the Slice: These places serve to go and you don’t get a server. You order up front, grab your pizza and either head out the door or find a seat that has no crumbs on it. So why are you tipping them? Because you feel bad that they have poor job hunting skills?

Most Submarine Sandwich Shops: Again, another place where you are not supposed to have to leave a gratuity. These places pay at least minimum wage. Welcome to food service. When was the last time you tipped at Burger King? Never? Exactly!

Mom and Pop Takeout or Dine-In Eateries: I can’t reinforce this rule of thumb more often. If they don’t have servers, and it’s not a bar, you do not tip. Places that offer ready to eat food on the go are already making money from your hunger. If they don’t serve you at your table, like a real eatery, you don’t have to feel bad by not tipping.

Hotdog Stands or Mobile Food Stands: Again, they grabbed a hotdog or burger, etc, and made it for you. These people own these stands for the most part. The making of the food for you is included in the prices. No tip is required.

Chivalry Isn’t Dead: Five Ways To Up Your Skills Easily

November 11, 2010 by IamMoody

Contrary to popular belief, chivalry is indeed very much alive my friends! While this does not mean that some guys will never learn the caveat of merits and values that go hand-in-hand with being chivalrous, for certain there are we men who do. However, I am sure that you can all agree with me, for the most part, that we quite often come across people who have no manners whatsoever. Whenever I see this great lacking in social aperture it does make me wonder how such persons were raised. It makes me ponder if they are naturally rude. It also begs to ask the question: Did their significant other settle for less, or did this person just lose their manners and sense of caring and wellbeing for those other than themselves over time? In any case, there are some ways that we can all be more chivalrous. And being chivalrous is also manly, for all of you guys out there reading this. To better kick start your chivalry engine—here are five chivalrous musts that all guys should adhere to.

  1. Always Open Doors: This goes without saying. Car doors, the house door, doors to the restaurant. No matter where you are, opening doors for others is courteous and respectful. No matter if they are the elderly or your significant other. Open that damn door already!
  2. Burping in Public and Belching Contests Are Immature: Keep all of your bodily gasses masked. Nobody wants to hear or smell them, including your partner. That’s what bathrooms are made for. If you think its hilarious to belch at them, you probably will never learn. And, how romantic, to boot!
  3. Roses Win Over Hearts: Want to be really romantic for your lady? Try buying flowers for her at least once per month. Women love flowers, men. Oh you are short on cash? Nice try! The local grocery store sells single roses and by the dozen for very cheap hotshot.
  4. Proper Table Etiquette is Admirable: The kind words of your mother come to mind here. Chew with your freaking mouth closed. Keep your elbows off the table. Don’t shout. Your bread plate is to your left. There is such a thing as a salad fork and a dinner fork. Enough said!
  5. Put Others Before Yourself: Wow, this one should really be at the top of the list. Chivalry embodies others coming first. Following this mantra does come around full circle, and ends up being in your favor in the end. For those who don’t believe so, you are a self-centered, self-loving narcissist. Yeah, I went there!

Leggings, Tights or Second Skin…

November 11, 2010 by IamMoody

It is no secret that I was not thrilled to see the leggings come back around. I was even less thrilled to see them stay around. I am now appalled to see how they are being worn now. Not because they don’t look good, but because it is almost scandals the way that they are being worn.

Leggings were originally thin and tight pants. These were made so thick that they did not shine through and show off the leg, although it hugged the legs tight enough to show off the legs. These original leggings were worn under skirts and dresses when the dress was short enough to potentially show off the unmentionables.

Modern leggings are not as thick as the original leggings. They are closer to nylons, often made with spandex instead of cotton. These leggings can be thin enough to allow the shine of the person’s legs to show through, especially if the individual is flexing in order to step up onto something or is bending down at the knees.

Lindsay Lohan: Leggings Gone Wild! The modern leggings were meant to be worn under something, such as a short skirt or dress. Some people even wear these modern leggings under their jeans if they have torn or ripped jeans, adding visual interest, modesty and warmth to the jeans.

Unfortunately, there has been a movement in which the modern leggings are being worn as a second skin with nothing over them. They are being slid over the person’s body, and nothing else is being used to cover them. This scandalous look is being used by woman from the age of 5 up. Even the senior citizens have been found wearing this second skin type of clothing.

Please, take a moment and really look at the leggings. Are they so thin and so tight that they look painted to you? Are they really helping you look good? Could you put something over it and make it look better? Do you really want to cut the blood supply to your legs and waist by dressing in something this tight? Really?

Guys: How to Use a Flatiron Properly – Three Easy Steps

November 11, 2010 by IamMoody

It used to be that if a guy used a hair care device such as a flatiron to get the hairstyle that he wanted, many other guys would rag on him and give him flack for being overly effeminate. However, much has changed in the world of style and fashion today. Now it is no longer taboo to use a flatiron as a guy – I use mine all of the time and swear by that thing – and if you are looking to really achieve that saucy and sultry hairstyle that you want, even if you have shorter hair, a flatiron can easily get you there. However, there are some simple steps that you can take to make your experience with using a flatiron one that you don’t later regret, as some people will misuse them and actually burn or damage their hair. So to better help you guys out along the way, here are three easy steps to using your flatiron properly and attaining the hairstyle that you desire, without burning your face off in the process.

  1. Apply thermal protector first. They actually make these sprays that you can easily find at most grocery stores. They don’t cost too much money either. All you do is lightly mist your hair with the spray before using your flatiron. This way the spray protects your hair from frying from the heat.
  2. Follow the layers of your hair. All hair has layers, usually three layers. So no matter if you hair is short or long, you can easily find how the layers sit. By using a brush and your flatiron, and following the layers, you can greatly simplify this process and net yourself the hairstyle that you are seeking.
  3. Use long and even strokes with your flatiron. Don’t rush the process; your hair needs some heat in order to be straightened. Using small and even strokes and being patient are the keys here. You can also try using some hair straitening product that’s made for flatirons – which you can also find at most grocery stores for pretty cheap.

There is a Right Way to Use Lotion?

November 5, 2010 by IamMoody

MoisturiserA lot of women use lotion frequently throughout the day. The put the lotion on after they have gotten out of the shower and dried off. They refresh the lotion several times a day and all but use lotion as a secondary scent. However, there is a right way to use lotion that can limit the number of times that you have to put lotion on your body and frees you from the eternal cycle of putting lotion on and having the skin feel dry later.

There is a small danger to using a lot of lotion. This danger comes in the form of a physical addiction to the lotion. Don’t panic when I say that. You cannot get sick by going through a lotion withdraw, but your body can show some side effects to using the lotion less often. When your body has an addiction to lotion, it will decrease the natural amount of lubrication and fluid that it sends to the skin because it gets used to you providing that through your lotion. The withdraw is a few days of your skin being a little bit dryer than normal as your body begins to reactivate its own moisture providing mechanisms.

To use lotion properly, which is to protect and put some moisture into the skin, there is a simple technique that provides lasting results and limits the chances of a lotion addiction. Simply apply the lotion immediately after the shower and before you dry off. Be sure to apply the lotion to all areas of your body. You will not need a lot and you will not need a special lotion to do this. Body creams and butters are just as effective as well. When you are done putting your lotion on, pat yourself dry with a clean towel.

The reason this method works better than the application of moisture after you are dry and throughout the day is that your skin pores are open immediately after a warm shower. This allows the lotion to penetrate deeper into the skin and protect it at a deeper level. The lotion then does not evaporate off the skin, causing further dryness and you do not have to apply it throughout the day.

There are some areas of the body that you may feel the need to put lotion on more than once a day though. These areas are those areas where the skin is under a lot of stress. Most people find that their hands need more than one application of lotion and some find that they need extra lotion on their elbows throughout the day. Feel free to put lotion on your hands and elbows if needed because the skin cycles very quickly in these areas and the hands are almost constantly exposed on a person. The frequent washing and drying of the hands will cause them to feel dry throughout the day and lotion can help them feel better.
