Recession Proof Your Kitchen

July 6, 2010 by IamMoody

As we all tighten our belts and try to stretch our dollars as far as we can on smaller and smaller budgets and higher food prices, we need to explore more ways to stock our cupboards to get the most out of the money we spend on our groceries. With some shopping savvy and culinary savior faire, there are many ways to beat the high cost of feeding our families or for that matter, ourselves.
Make a Menu
You don’t need to be an executive chef at a Five-star resort or own a restaurant to write a menu. But you cannot begin to shop for food if you don’t have a game plan. What does your family enjoy eating? Can you make a slow cooker stew or a casserole that will be eaten over a few days? Write a menu for a week or for the month including all three meals. If your child or spouse takes a lunch to work or school, include that also. It does help if you have a bit of a culinary acumen, but if you eat out all the time we may have some trouble.
Here is a sample menu for a week’s worth of dinners:
Monday-Tacos with Rice and Beans
Tuesday-Pot Roast with Potatoes and Carrots
Wednesday-Macaroni and Cheese with Hotdogs or Kielbasa
Thursday-Hearty Pork and Barley Soup
Friday-Lasagna with green salad
Saturday-Whole Chicken with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, vegetables
Sunday-Meatloaf with a baked Potato and vegetables

Recipes
Before you can begin to shop, you need to know what you are buying. Recipes are a crucial factor in the money saving equation. If you have cookbooks, internet access, or the recipes in your head; write down all the ingredients separating them into categories to make the trip easier. I divide all foodstuffs into categories such as: freezer, cooler, canned and produce. This way you can easily flow through the store aisles like a breeze. It would truly help you in shopping if you know someone who lived through the depression, for they have many tricks to stretch the dollar when it comes to buying and preparing food. One important thing before going to the market is to check your cupboards, pantry, refrigerator and freezer to make sure you don’t already have the items you are going shopping for. Always keep your pantry full of such staples as flour, sugar, condensed soups, canned tomatoes, rice, pasta, bread, cheese, lunchmeat and cheese.

Shopping
Grocery stores have an abundance of ways to cheat the recession, but it always helps to know some of the tricks as you walk through the store. Look for the saving inserts that are stacked as you enter with your cart, these are the in-store specials. In all the aisles there are saving stickers for store name brands and deep discount items that are being promoted. The ends of each aisle have discounted items also. The lower you go, the better you save. Check the bottom shelf for things like cereal, rice, in addition to other items that are cheaper than the same items as the shelves above them. Sometimes it takes time and concentration to find deals and specials, so if possible, try to shop without any disruptions. It also helps if you can shop in a large discount store. It costs money to join the club but pays off in the long run. Furthermore, you don’t have to buy name brands. If you are making a stew and need diced tomatoes, buy the cheapest diced tomatoes available, as it is getting mixed up with other ingredients and no one will know the difference. The same goes for the meat in the stew. Buying a lower grade meat such as chuck roast will not hurt the integrity of the stew; it will probably help it as it has more marbling of fat and will enhance the flavor profile. You can always find incredible deals on such items as mashed potato mix and macaroni and cheese that will last for weeks and is not perishable. Buy frozen vegetables instead of canned, not only are they better for you, you will also find they are less expensive and usually are on sale. The freezer section has a variety of meals you can purchase at a low cost per portion. The aforementioned lasagna is a good example. I found a tray of lasagna at a store on sale for $4.99 and served 6 portions. That’s .86 cents per person. Staying away from convenience items is also important. They are overpriced and frequently full of sodium, fats, and preservatives. I shiver with dread when I see premade sandwiches in the deli for an astounding price, when I could make 8 sandwiches at home for the same amount of cash. In conclusion, have fun, shop smart and you will figure out ways to save money and enjoy some good home cooked meals. Here are a couple of recipes:

Slow Cooker Pot Roast with Potatoes and Carrots (Cooking time 6 hours) Prep time 30 minutes
Serves 4 with leftovers
2# Chuck Roast
1package onion soup mix
1 can diced tomatoes
3 large potatoes cubed
2 ribs of celery
1 onion
2 carrots peeled and sliced
1 clove of garlic minced
1 TBL chicken or beef base
Directions
Place chuck roast into crock pot on high setting
Pour on onion soup mix and 1 cup of water
Cut potatoes into cubes add to crock pot
Cut up celery, carrots and onion into bite size pieces and add to crock pot
Pour canned tomatoes- juice and all into crock pot.
Make sure the pot has enough liquid to just cover all ingredients. Cook for 3 hours covered. Check after 4 hours to see if meat is breaking up, if so turn crock pot to low setting and add garlic, and blend in beef or chicken base. Once meat is falling apart add more water if desired to make soup or you can serve as a stew.

Ground Beef and Pasta Casserole (Cooking time 45 minutes) prep time 20 minutes
Serves 4 with leftovers
2 # ground beef
1 bag mixed vegetables
1 # favorite pasta
2 cups favorite shredded cheese
1 can cream of mushroom
1 can cream of celery
Directions
Cook off ground beef in a sauce pan, drain off fat. As ground beef is browning, cook the pasta, drain and set aside. When ground beef is ready and drained, add pasta, cheese, vegetables and soup -into large bowl and mix well. Add milk as needed, but not too thin, the pasta will absorb some of the liquid.
Place in a casserole dish and bake in 350 degree oven until cheese bubbles in the center.

10 Second Film Festival

July 5, 2010 by IamMoody

10 Second Film Festival (photo via Soap Factory)

The Soap Factory’s annual 10 Second Film Festival, held behind the St. Anthony Main art gallery, is always a nice way to round out the Fourth of July. MPLS.TV hosted the event, screening the 100 best movies in various categories, such as “Mindless Violence” and “What The Hell Did I Just See?”, and determining a winner for each. Private Dancer performed before the films began as the Red, White and Boom! fireworks display loomed overhead.

What’s more American than short attention spans? The panel of judges, including Barb Abney of the Current and Robyn Robinson (who had some very vocal admirers in the crowd), picked winners based off of the cheers and jeers of the rowdy audience, and host Kevin Albertson handed out awards to the winners, if they happened to be in earshot. Many entries were goofy, random, and bizarre; several were clever and interesting uses of the constrained time period; all were entertaining to watch to some extent. Thin Films produced some real crowd-pleasers, like winning entry “Sticks” and a man eating a carrot very quickly. The whole thing was a bit like surfing Youtube on a larger scale.

The turnout was impressive, comparable to last year’s showing of 3000+ people. Things like this are part of what I really love about the Twin Cities, that so many people would come out to this kind of odd but fun event, on the Fourth of July no less. The 501 Club hosted the After Party, with DJs spinning tunes and remixing the video footage from some of the entries. Below are some of the films:

Sushi with Your Poochie

July 5, 2010 by IamMoody

July 20th and July 21st will be great days to go out with your dog and enjoy amazing sushi. Not only will you get to have a fantastic meal with your four legged best friend, but you can go out to meet others who share your passion for dogs and raw fish. This does lead to a good question though, what do you wear and does the dog need to get dressed up?

Sushi meals and fundraisers tend to be dressy affairs. It is a good idea to dress up to this engagement. Consider wearing a comfortable but stylish dress. One that is not floor length is ideal. Also avoid one with a high collar or one that ties around the neck. This fashion can make you look as though you are wearing a collar. You may also want to avoid heels as there will be a lot going on. Even the best trained dog may be tempted to pull on the leash at least once and this can easily cause you to fall or hurt yourself if you are in heels. Consider wearing those cute ballet flats that you have stuck in the corner.

For men, the sushi bar with your dog is not a time to slack off or look sloppy. Consider wearing a nice pair of dress pants, patent leather shoes, a polo shirt and belt. Leave the boots and sneakers at home. You are out to eat, not out for a jog with the dog. Besides, with this many women and their dogs, you just might find that special someone at the sushi and happy hour bar. You should want to make a good first impression.

It is important to remember that your dog is going to be with you all the time during this event. You need your dog to look good too. Schedule to have the dog groomed the day before the Sushi with your Poochie event. In addition, the leash and collar of the dog should be gender appropriate and stylish. If your leash looks like it is about to fall apart consider picking up a new one. There are is a large selection of stylish and practical leashes to fit every size dog.

Now, there will be some dogs who will be dressed for the event. This is not necessary; however, if you do decide to do this there are some things to remember. Always make sure the outfit is comfortable for your dog. You may be willing to go out in clothing that is more stylish than comfortable, but your dog shouldn’t be made to do so. Dress the dog appropriately for the weather. July will be hot and dressing the dog up in layers and tight clothing will only make the dog hotter. This can cause serious health problems for the dog and should be avoided. Do not match your dog. I know that people say they look like their dog after a while, but this does not need to extend into the clothing world.

The Joys of Painting the Bathroom

July 3, 2010 by IamMoody

My wife and I agreed that after our vacation our next project would be to paint the bathroom. Great, no problem, choose a color and go at it. Wrong!
She brought home a packet of paint samples in all the colors and hues of the rainbow to look over and discuss- yes guys you heard right-discuss.
Here is an illustration of what choosing a color is like when you are married.
Green, ok green is green right? Wrong! There is marsh green, pine, olive fringe, half moon bay, and twenty different shades of teal. The same goes for blue, yellow, red, orange, purple and brown. Then there are the tranquil, lush, complex and subtle moods that need to be gone over and examined. Tones such as monochromatic, analogous and complementary have to be taken into account, because you cannot sit and do your business or shave if a harmonious look of combining light and textures is not achieved.
I picked out a blue that I thought would be nice. We could still use the same towels, shower curtain, rug and toilet cozy that we already had.
Boy, am I an idiot! What would be the point of painting at all if we still used the same frills that we have now? What was I thinking?
We finally agreed on a blue called Worn Denim, which we can accessorize with navy blue trim, and navy blue towels, shower mat, rug and cozies. To get into the spirit of things I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond and purchased a Navy blue Lufa and Navy blue trimmed razor handle, all without giving up my man card.
So gentlemen, a word to the wise. Before you decide to shop for paint, know your Lemon Balm from your Melodious Peach, and your Chilled Celery from your Cozy Lilac, but also know that our wives and girlfriends are different from us, in the way they think and the way they imagine the world. Which is a wonderful thing for all of us-otherwise the whole world would be covered in paneling.

Fashionable Jewels

July 1, 2010 by IamMoody

[media id=12 width=320 height=240]

Everyone knows that accessories can be used to finish an outfit. These accessories include purses, scarves, belts and yes, jewelry. Finding the right accessories isn’t hard and things don’t have to match perfectly. Finding the right jewelry can even add a touch of class and appeal to an otherwise plain outfit. Even jeans and a tee-shirt can be dressed up with a piece of jewelry.

Now, I’m not saying that the jewelry has to be expensive. The jewelry doesn’t even have to be store bought! It just needs to look good. Homemade jewelry is great because it can be designed to fit you and your styles. This does not mean that the homemade jewelry has to look homemade though. The homemade jewelry can have a very chic and designer feel to it with the use of some more expensive beads and stones.

There are no set rules on jewelry. If you like it, wear it. Take a look at what is being shown in some of the magazines. Right now, the bigger and clunky styles are hot! Pieces that have that retro feel are another sure bet. These pieces tend to be classy and fun at the same time, fitting themselves into just about every style outfit. Many of these pieces are even durable enough to wear on picnics and to the beach.

You can find these pieces of jewelry at many of the department stores such as Macy’s and J.C. Penny. However, if you or one of your friends are crafty, you may want to peruse the stores for ideas and then create your own. Another idea is to shop at the small businesses online to find the perfect piece of durable, classy and fashionable pieces of jewelry. Not only do you get to support a small business, but you get some of the cutest pieces. Most small businesses also specialize in unique pieces that have no match and no duplicates, making them as individual as you are.

How to Be a Better Husband

July 1, 2010 by IamMoody

This is dedicated to my mother. I am not writing this because I am the greatest husband in the world or because I have cornered the market on being a good spouse, I just believe in marriage and want to give those guys out there a few hints and tips on how to keep your wife happy and to maybe avoid getting pestered to do something around the house.
On one of my days off, I do the dishes, clean the house, empty the garbage, cat box, recycling and clean out the fridge. I have also been known to do some shopping and cooking dinner and breakfast. Laundry is optional; I will do my own, but leave my wife to do hers because as a male I am an idiot when it comes to delicates, permanent press and ironing. I am also very secure in my masculinity as I lint brush the duvet.
I don’t do these things because I am the sweetest guy on the planet; I do it because I was taught at a young age how to execute these duties. I was one of the original latchkey kids, with both parents working. So the arrangement was that my sister and I had dinner ready when mom got home, having the house cleaned and I also assisting with the shopping trips on the weekends.
At the time I had no idea that my mom had such enormous insight. I thought I was getting ripped off from the joys of boyhood because I had traded in my football helmet for an apron. Later in life I came to understand the importance of sharing the daily household tasks, that the wife is not solely responsible for everything. Sometimes both spouses need to work or the woman has decided she wants a career. Regardless of why, sharing the workload is a good idea.
If you are having people over for dinner or a family get together, vacuum, dust and straighten up the house without being asked. If your wife is working all day, maybe have dinner on the table for her when she gets home. Run errands and help out when you can, a small amount of consideration goes a long way.
Either that or put the kids to work.
