July 27, 2010 by IamMoody

Being the enigmatic lover of all things that are related to body art, tattoos and getting inked, there are just some events that rarely come to Phoenix, Arizona that are ones not to be missed. Especially if you love tattoos and the related subculture that is directly associated with them! For all of you neophytes for getting tatted who happen to live in Arizona, or who are willing to make the trek out and endure the humid monsoon heats and drizzles of late August, there is one event that you should most certainly add to your calendar: The Hell City Tattoo Festival!

This tattoo festival is entitled: “HELL CITY HEADS WEST!” This will be the Hell City 10 “Let It Burn” festival, which is taking place from August 27-29, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona. The fest is to be held at the prestigious Arizona Biltmore, located at: 2400 E. Missouri Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85016. You can find out more information about this one-of-a-kind event by visiting the website for it, located online at: http://www.hellcity.com.

To better apprise you of all the wondrous spectacles that will be taking place during this awesome event, I find it best to directly cite from their event website, as they really have a lot of great info to offer. If you love tats, and all things related to them, and oh so much more, don’t miss this awesome tattoo festival in Arizona folks!

The Scoop, according to Hellcity.com…

“Rain or Shine, Hell City is “One Hell Of A Good Time”! The Hell City Tattoo Festival is a tattoo convention put on by tattoo artists, featuring world class artists and collectors from around the world! Hell City brings you not only some of the world’s best tattoo masters, but also showcases many of today’s young, up and coming tattoo artists! It is much more than your typical tattoo convention though, Hell City is a one of a kind because we include many other activities that you won’t see at any other tattoo conventions.

If you have ever been to Hell City before, you have seen the massive crowds. The line that gathers before the gates even open looks more like the line to get into a sold out rock concert. Once inside, all that is Hell City will amaze your eyes, ears and skin. With everything from live entertainment on the main stage, to music, to free seminars, The Art Fusion Experiment, tattoo competitions every day, and the lovely Suicide Girls giving out the one of a kind trophies, you will want to stay the entire weekend at the Beautiful Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa! This is our new website with many new features to make your Hell City Experience that much more enjoyable! We encourage feedback from artists and members, your input will help shape the future of this social tattoo network!”

Aperitif Restaurant and Bar

July 20, 2010 by IamMoody

“Aperitif is a noun whose roots are from the Latin word aperire which is to open, stimulate or begin.  It is also a drink consumed before starting a meal, and is meant to be appetizing. “

Because the name is from a Latin word, Aperitif is an appropriate and aptly named restaurant and bar.  You can see the French, Italian and Spanish influence in the design, architecture and menu.

From the high ceilings braced with dark wooden joists, lanterns running the length of the patio, the wrought iron gates or the fountain surrounded by flowers, you can’t decide if you are in Monaco, Valencia, Naples, Monte Carlo, Athens or Tunis.

The menu is exceedingly adroit in reflecting this idea.  Ingredients such as Cous Cous, lamb, Tzatziki, pancetta, capers, Aioli, and Saffron are interwoven into this menu like a wonderful Mediterranean tapestry.

Executive Chef Chad Grant, formerly of Porterhouse, brings his fresh, locally purchased, made-from-scratch concept along with him to the outer suburbs.  You can guarantee that the meats, seafood, produce and dairy are fresh and none of the food is processed, packaged or bought in.

The bottled water that is served to the customers is from Aqua Health and is local.  The chefs even use it to cook the pasta.  His pizza dough, brioche, bread and focaccia are made daily in their wood burning oven.  As he told me in our discussion “the bread you are eating right now was pulled out of the oven at around noon today”.

Outside is an herb garden that boasts basil, yellow basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, parsley and other herbs that the kitchen uses to spice up the flavor profiles of their food to keep it simple, fresh, and rustic.

As Chef Chad writes a great menu, runs a kitchen and brigade with perfection and precision, so too does the front of the house function under the direction of manager Corey T. Nyman.  The dining room and bar performed like an orchestra with all the instruments operating in synch.  Food coming and going, tables being bused, people being seated, beverages poured and orders being taken reminded me of how a well-run dining room is supposed to function.

With a smile as wide as the Grand Canyon, Corey was accommodating and answered all of my questions.  Never in my 36 years of food service have I seen anyone as positive and upbeat.  This goes a long way into explaining the professionalism of his staff.

We started with the assorted olives, salmon cakes and house-cut chips and Alfredo.  The salmon cakes were two perfectly seasoned cakes molded with fresh salmon and lacking the extreme amount of filler you find elsewhere.  They were served with lemon aioli and an Arugula salad that was so sinfully delicious I should seek absolution from the nearest priest.

The house cut fries are a bit different.  The Alfredo sauce was a bit overpowered by the fried taste of the potatoes. They were also a bit difficult and messy to eat.  Otherwise they were well presented; stacked lengthwise in a pasta bowl, smothered in the creamy garlic sauce.

The Veal Bolognese is a smooth velvety mirepoix of carrots, celery and onions cooked down with a rich tomato broth, red wine, and ground veal, then tossed with toothy fettuccine.  The rosemary focaccia bread with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and grated parmesan served alongside was the perfect accompaniment.

The Swordfish steak is cooked and coated with a citrus glaze and set atop a nest of carrots and spaghetti squash, nestled alongside an arugula salad with English peas that brought me back to my father’s garden when I ate them straight from the pod.  Aside from the swordfish, the squash was the best thing on the plate.

Dessert was an ice cream cake surrounded by ground coffee mixed with crushed Oreo cookies with a Heath bar crumble through the center, served on a plate with caramel delicately drizzled from top to bottom. It was so rich and decadent that a trip to the gym is now in the day planner.

The ambiance of the dining room is open, inviting but can be a bit loud when it gets full.  The dining room seats 236 people and there is a patio with a full bar that seats another 100.

Not many reviewers mention the bathrooms in their story, not unless they are issuing a caveat, but the bathrooms here are like a luxurious spa.  Real towels are rolled and stacked on a shelf above a trough that acts as the sink. Meanwhile you put your hands under the spout and are finessed by the water cascading onto your soapy digits.  The only thing missing was a mud pack facial and a fluffy robe.

Aperitif opened on January 30 of this year and is owned by The Nyman group which has restaurant holdings in Las Vegas, Scottsdale AZ and New York.

Aperitif is located at772 Beilenberg Drive in Woodbury.  The phone # is 651-578-3000 or you can check them out online at www.AperitifRestaurant.com

Do not miss the chance to dine at this exceptionally run establishment.  They care about what they do, and it is evident from the food, the staff and the management.

Three Tips on Getting a Hair Style You Will Adore!

July 20, 2010 by IamMoody

Over the years, I have greatly played around with my hair and have had so many different hair styles that I would be—in all honesty—unable to recall how many ones that I have sported on my noggin. Most recently, I had a longer hair style that had cool blue streaks that were on the front bangs. However, despite trying every and any hair dyes out there, even hair stains, I found that quite often the blue dye would bleed whenever I sweated and get all over the place; not to mention getting on pillows, sheets, towels, clothing…you name it.

So I recently made the decision to chop my longer locks for a shorter, newer and more stylish approach, and really just for a change of pace. In the process of doing so, I arrived at this conclusion: There are some really easy and fun ways to find a new hair style that you will just love. Hopefully these candid tips will aid you in your quest for that pristine cut you so desire.

1. Find pictures of the hair style that you want first. This is rather easily done if you have the internet or some fashion magazines. Try and find pictures that closely resemble the hair style that you desire. Then print them out on your computer or cut them out of the magazine to bring in to show to your hair stylist.
2. The hair salon you choose greatly matters. For certain, hair cuts can vastly range in price, depending upon where you go to get them. The best advice that I can offer here—and based upon my own experiences as well—is that you get what you pay for. Going for that ten dollar hair cut and being dissatisfied with it should be no shocker, if that is the choice that you make.
3. Always demonstrate the length you want cut off using your fingers. Never tell a hair stylist to remove ‘so many inches’ because quite often it may be less or more than you want. A great rule of thumb to follow here is to show them how much hair you want cut off using your fingers. In this manner, they can have a far greater idea of what to cut off.

Courtney Love Returns To Minneapolis, Bicycle Film Festival Hits Town

July 20, 2010 by IamMoody

Courtney Love of Hole (photo by Hedi Slimane

When Hole played First Avenue last night, frontwoman Courtney Love made sure everyone knew of her past in MInneapolis. Love considers Minneapolis her adopted hometown, and was breifly a part of the famed local girl-punk group Babes In Toyland, before being kicked out due to problems with lead singer Kat Bjelland. According to the Star Tribune, she went into funny details about her time in the city back in the late 80’s, talking about sexual encounters in First Ave’s backstage area and having an alter-ego that hailed from Edina. Dropping references to Grain Belt and the CC Club, and even making an attempt at covering The Replacements’ “Unsatisfied” (which she later apologised for botching on her Twitter), Love made it clear she has a very personal connection here. Many of her well-known Hole songs from early on her career were written in Minneapolis. The show seemed to go off better than her recent DC disaster, probably because she felt more of a personal connection to the place and the people. Good to know we can bring out the best in her.

Bicylce Film Festival invaded Minneapolis this weekend

This weekend also saw the 10th Annual Bicycle Film Festival in town, showcasing some impressive films promoting the awesomeness of bikes. You can check out the movies on the festivals website, including Benny Zenga & Lucas Brunelle’s intense Line Of Sight, a helmet-view depiction of a day in the life of a courier. Dipping and weaving between cars and riding at insane speeds, the cyclists in the movies are inches away from being daredevil riders, and the first-hand position gives the whole thing a personal sort of experience.

What to Expect When Getting a Tattoo

July 16, 2010 by IamMoody

Being the neophyte and protagonist that I am for amazing body art, like the full sleeve tattoos that I enjoy brandishing on both of my arms, I always get asked many questions about my tattoos by numerous people that approach me who have never gotten one. This has prompted me, after quite literally being asked hundreds of questions regarding the subject matter, to write an article about tattoos and just what you can expect when you are getting one. Some things to keep in mind here—stuff that you more than likely already know—are that tattoos are not only art, they are a permanent fixture upon your body. So having a great tattoo and knowing what to expect and where to get one is pivotal to you being satisfied with your ink, and knowing that you are getting tatted in a safe, clean and legal environment. Perhaps these few tips can greatly aid you if you decide to get under the ink gun and add a crazy-cool tattoo to your body!

1. It usually is going to be painful. There are some places of your body that you will never feel any pain, and there are others that will seem like a hot knife is scraping across your body; like the inside of the arm, or the ditch of the arm. So to easily answer this question: be prepared for pain. But no pain means no gain! That’s the price you pay for a great tattoo!
2. Look around at tattoo parlors before you get inked. I am unable to emphasize or stress this point enough. Take your time when you are selecting a tattoo parlor, and the artist for that matter. Look around the shop: is it clean and nice, or grungy and scary? Check out their portfolio of tattoos as well; do they really appeal to you, or do you think you could find better work?
3. You get what you pay for. Some places may charge less for tattoos than others, but in the end you get what you pay for. The key is in finding an artist and tattoo parlor that you like, that charges a decently fair price, and that offers first rate work. This way you can keep going back there once you get hooked on the body inking process!
