Ode’ to Beer: Top Ten Reasons to Suck Down Some Suds Tonight!

August 30, 2010 by IamMoody

Most men that I know love to drink beer. I also have been known to greatly appreciate the tingly tickle of a rich lager pouring softly down my throat. Beer seemingly has been around for ages, and it has many different forms, tastes and history in our society. For me, I have loved beer since the day I first turned 21 years old, and could start bar-hopping and buying it legally. So I feel it of some sort of significance to explain why I enjoy this frothy, bubbly brew so much. And perhaps to offer you other beer protagonists out there with even more ample fodder so that you can justify popping the top on that brown bottle and enjoying a delicious glass of beer tonight!

Top Ten Reasons to Drink More Beer!

  1. We all know that a few beers give you a nice buzz; at least for most people. So if you have had a long day at work, chances are you can hear those bottles whispering in your ear in soft voices all day long. Once you get home, there is no shame, pop one open and enjoy it!
  2. Sports broadcasts. This one is nearly self explanatory. However, if you love to watch sports, beer is a timeless staple to this drinking endeavor.
  3. Beer goggles. I think that more men and women have made sexual mistakes due to beer goggles. Then again, is there really any harm in having a night of fun, even if you wake up regretting it the next day? Blame beer, and then drink another one down as you shake off the memory.
  4. Weddings. You love your best pal, and you are happy he or she is getting married. But let’s face it, weddings can be very long, drawn out and boring; even if they are beautiful. So all the more reason to get a few beers in your system, and start the reception early.
  5. Back country bug zapper competitions. There are some places in the US where there literally is nothing to do. That being said, beer can really make a night hovered around the bug zapper quite an interesting affair.
  6. You just got fired. Man does that suck for anyone and just about everyone, unless you were planning on quitting already. Go ahead, slam a few beers. You deserve it!
  7. Boredom woes easily resolved. There can be those never-ending days where you are just bored to tears. But beer can make everything better. So what are you waiting for?
  8. Beer is healthy for your heart. According to an article on Forbes, beer is actually healthy for your heart. They say, “a number of studies are showing that moderate consumption of alcohol, including beer, can have similar heart healthy effects, including making men 30 to 35% less likely to have a heart attack than those who abstain.”
  9. The classic clanking of bottles. There is just something about the resounding clank of beer bottles banging together when toasts are made that is second-to-none.
  10. And the top reason to drink some more beer today: Getting hammered. Let’s face the facts: We can all have some really cruddy days. But beer is your best friend during such tumultuous times. Forget about why you are seeking escapism with a controlled substance like alcohol. Go ahead, crack a fresh bottle open and enjoy—as your worries melt away in the foamy goodness!

Fall Fashion

August 30, 2010 by IamMoody

As much as it pains me, the summer is almost over. This means it is time to start looking at a fall wardrobe. There are some fundamental differences between the summer wardrobe and the fall wardrobe. This does not mean that you cannot incorporate pieces from your summer wardrobe into your fall wardrobe though, providing that the pieces are temperature appropriate.

Texture and Weight

Fall is a time in which the temperature begins its decent into the realm of the cold. This does not mean that it is cold yet, but that it could easily become cold. Fall is the time of layering pieces to ensure that you do not freeze. Some of the best pieces for fall are light weight sweaters that feature the short sleeves and wider neck lines. These pieces can be layered with a small wrap or a tank top under them.

The texture for clothing that is fall appropriate should be cotton and a knit. This does not mean that you should be wearing a heavy sweater, but rather that the knit should be a thin and light weight knit material. Be careful that the outfit does not allow you to see through it. Look in a mirror under bright light and low light. Look for bra out lines or shifts in color that would be where your undergarments are located. If you can see your skin tone, then the knit is too open to be used alone. If you see this, put a tank top under the piece. Knit should only be worn on the top, not as a bottom.

Color

Fall is a more drab time of year. This is not to say that there is not burst of color in the fall time. The trees are alive with the fire colors and the sky can frequently still have the beautiful blue color to it. The grass may not be as green as it was, but it is not yet covered with the white of snow. There are some flowers that bloom in this transition time and will appear like oasis of summer and light in the fall world.

Take your que from nature. Wear colors that are vibrant in reds and browns. Small amounts of glitter or sparkle can be worn in your outfits to help to draw more light to you. A great way to get this look is to buy sweaters that have a single strand of metallic thread laced in with the threads used to create the knit. This helps to add a sparkle to the outfit with out over doing it.

Your bottoms should be weather appropriate. If it is cold, please skip the short skirts and hot pants. These outfits are more appropriate for summer. The skirts should be a little longer and walking shorts or Burmuda shorts are much more appropriate for this time of year. On damp days, consider wearing a pair of light weight jeans. Browns and blacks promise to be very popular this year as people are becoming more utilitarian clothing this year.

Cut

As we have discussed before, the cut of your outfits is very important. It helps to define your shape and define the outfit in general. Since it is fall, the ¾ sleeve is going to be more appropriate than the French cut sleeves. The V neck is very popular this year and I suspect it will remain popular as the season shifts. The great thing about the V neck is that it is a great shape for people with ample and not so ample bosoms.

The A line skirt is going to be a big hit this year. This skirt will provide people who do not have a lot of hip some additional shape. Those who are not lacking in hip will find that the skirt will help to balance their shape better than skirts that are pencil shaped. The mermaid skirts are not in this season.

Accessories

There is never enough talk about the accessories. This fall, the accessories are taking a card from the summer look. This includes big and bold pieces. Expect to see a lot of bold colors and clunky styles in the stores. Purses will act as the pops of color and the pieces of jewelry will have a brilliant look. Shoes should also act as pieces of interest. Jackets are not for warmth in this season, but rather as fashion accessories. The Pea coat is still the top of the line jacket and the large buttons help to add a balance to the outfit. Skip the hats early in the fall and allow a bright hair color or modern cut stand out.

Think before Tatting

August 18, 2010 by IamMoody

Now, I am not the person who can preach against tattoos. I have 4 of them, 3 in highly visible locations. However, from my experience, I can say that there should have been some additional thought taken when considering two of the tattoos. They were incredibly painful, and every now and again, I wonder if I could not have put them in a better location. It’s not that I dislike the tattoos, but rather that they are so visible and they often appear less than professional on me.

Now, I have an excuse for my stupidity. The tattoo was free and I had a very limited amount of tie to consider the location and color of the tattoos. It was obviously too little time for me to consider. I opted to get two matching tattoos on my wrists. Even though I could see my tattoo artist’s wrist tattoos were up higher, I opted for the area right below the wrist joint. Mistake 1, that location is incredibly painful to have tattooed. In addition, the tattoo in that area is more prone to having the ink fall out since there is so much movement there. Mistake 2 was to have them done in black rather than grey. The black is very visible against my pale skin, making the tattoos appear bigger than they actually are.

Here are some things to consider when you are looking at getting at tattoo.

1. Do you really want the tattoo or are you getting it because it seems like a good idea and a cool thing to do. A great way to avoid the impulse tattoo is to make your self wait 6 months before committing to getting the tattoo. If the desire for that tattoo lasts 6 months and the design and location has not changed, then you can feel comfortable getting the tattoo done.

2. Will the tattoo interfere with your chances at getting a professional job? While most employers do not hold a tattoo against a prospective employee, there are several places that look down on the tattoo. Hospitals and public figures often do not encourage tattoos in that employees as this can hurt the image of the company as a professional facility. If having a visible tattoo is going to hurt these chances, consider getting one in hidden location, such as the shoulder, chest or back.

3. Will you feel uncomfortable dressed up with the tattoo so visible? I never thought that I might feel odd with tattoos showing while dressed well. I enjoy dressing up and I look good in a suit. Unfortunately, the tattoos on my wrists are clearly visible while I talk and move my arms. This does not bother me when I am with friends, but when I am meeting a customer, I am very conscious of it. It’s the same way when I go to the gym and participate in classes or discuss things with other professionals.

4. Will you like the tattoo years down the road? Everyone thinks about when they are senior citizens and wonder if they will still like the tattoos that they have on their body. Most people assume that they will no longer care whether they are tattooed or not at that point. However, some people get bands and teams on their body. What happens when the band breaks up or the team is sold? Will you still want that tattoo then? This is the thing that a person really has to think about.

5. Lucky tattoos exist, as do the bad luck tattoos. There truly is the 6 month curse when it comes to some tattoos. The number one tattoo that has the 6 month curse is the partner’s name on the body. Remember, the tattoo is nearly permanent. To have it removed is incredibly painful and often leaves a scar. For this reason, people often tattoo their spouse or partner on their body as a simple that the relationship will last forever. However, for some reason, as soon as the name is tattooed on, the relationship almost always ends. This leaves the person with a name on their body that they are no longer associated with. Talk about awkward.

While tattoos are becoming the norm in society, they still carry with them some stigma and concerns. It is only by addressing these concerns that a person can really feel comfortable having a tattoo inked to their body. Feel comfortable when addressing these concerns, then please, enjoy your tattoo and tip your artist well.

Dealing with Sunburns

August 18, 2010 by IamMoody

Summer is almost over. This thought has driven people to lay in the sun in huge numbers. No one wants to end the summer pale and pasty. Unfortunately, this has also led to more people getting burnt than was seen in the beginning of the year. The increased number of last minute fairs events that most cities put on also contributes to this burning skin movement.

Preventing Burns:

It is important to protect your skin from sunburns. They can cause serious pain and serious health concerns. The best way to do this is to cover the skin with clothing. This includes tee-shirts, long pants and a hat. This is not completely practical during the summer. A decorative umbrella can also act as a barrier between the sun and the skin and can be a very attractive piece of wardrobe.

Sunscreen should be applied to the skin that is going to be exposed to the sun. This will help to block the harmful rays of the skin. It is important to remember that the sunscreen and sun block are not long lasting lotions. They often need to be applied throughout the day. It is important to read the information on the back of the sunscreen and sun block to determine how often the lotion has to be applied. It is also important to remember that not all of these lotions are waterproof, so it is important to reapply the lotion after getting wet.

Healing Burns:

Aloe Vera is the number one treatment for sun burns. This lotion comes from the Aloe Vera plant and has been used by people since before the formation of United States. This is often a clear gel and has no odor. It can simply be smoothed on the skin and allowed to sit. It will absorb into the skin and begin the healing process. This gel will speed up the healing process, reduce pain and prevent infections.

There are other lotions that can be used to help the skin heal from a sun burn. Most of these lotions contain Aloe Vera and other antiseptic materials. Do not use lotions that contain glitter, dye or perfumes. The glitter can cause infections, the dye and perfume can cause additional pain.

Do not scratch at the sun burn no matter how much it itches. The itching feeling comes from the skin healing. By itching it, you risk opening the skin up and causing it to bleed, scar over or introduce infections into the body. When the skin begins to peel, do not pull at the skin. This can damage the skin below the dead and peeling skin. If the skin is blistered, do not pop the blisters as this opens the body up to infections. Simply apply the Aloe Vera carefully and allow the skin to heal itself.

If there is a large portion of the body burnt, consider seeking medical assistance. If a large amount of the skin is damaged, it may have trouble healing on its own. If a person experiences nausea or dizziness, seek medical assistance to assist the person in dealing with heat or sun stroke.

‘Skinny Jeans’ Are Super Fab! (Not Emo Anymore!)

August 18, 2010 by IamMoody

I am not so sure where the premonition that ‘emo kids’ and the ‘emo culture’ were the very first of all underground trends to adopt the skinny jeans philosophy. I actually have a good mind to think that this style of molding denim so that it ever so accentuates the body is more relative to the early 70s—and onwards—when hair bands and rock stars, as well as models, were always wearing jeans that were so tight that you nearly needed a pair of needle nose pliers in order to get your zipper all the way up. One thing is for sure: While the emo culture dominates the wearing of theses jeans presently—and I am not knocking any of you emo-loving people out there—there are plenty of reasons why other people (like me and you, etc.) can enjoy wearing skinny jeans on our legs as well!

To come fully clean, I was originally way into skateboarding when I was in high school, and the type of denim that I wore tended to be really baggy jeans with lots of pockets. Now, however, I am even seeing that more skaters rolling around town are sporting the skinny jean look. Perhaps they find it easy to maneuver their skateboard decks with these types of pants on. I have heard them be called other things as well, ranging from the omnipresent slang tagging of ‘weenie squeezers’ all the way to ‘gag-wear’ (because they fit so snug and tight).

But in all reality, I just got my hands on a few new pairs of white, blue and black denim skinny jeans, and I couldn’t be happier. They truly add some flare to my look, they ever so eloquently silhouette my legs and lower-to-upper sections of my body, and I am getting more brandishing looks from the ladies (as well as getting hit on) far more often. So for me, skinny jeans have truly allowed for me to change up my look a tad bit.

At the same time, trying to find a pair of them in 32 x 30 is a real challenge.

More on the Mullet (Part 2): Eight More Reasons To Laugh Your Socks Off!

August 18, 2010 by IamMoody

Okay, I already touched base upon the Mullet and why this horrendous-looking hairstyle is somehow still widely in use, and for a plethora of reasons that are unbeknownst to me, and that for the life of me I will never truly understand. But, it does make for some great hair style fashion blogger fodder; for certain it does! The reality is that if—and whenever I do—see a person sport a mullet, I have to try and not laugh. (They remind me of this monkey picture I have added to the upper left that has a primate mullet.) Generally when this occurs, I do end up laughing. I am coy enough not to point and jeer. But seriously: I think of seeing a person sporting a mullet like I would the worst NCAA mascot hopping around the field (a few choice teams come to mind here that just have ghastly-looking mascots, like a pickle, for example, but I will refrain from mentioning such collegiate teams for the sake of no legal liabilities—and also because I love NCAA football).

Back on track here: Mullets. If you did not have time to catch Part One, which should stir up a giggle or two in your gut, allow for me to apprise you. It was entitled, “Why Does the Mullet Still Exist?” You can also find it by Clicking Here. In that article I talked about the top eight reasons why there are still mullets, and why people think this hair style makes them look ‘cool.’ Citing from that article ever so briefly so we can get on to business here, the top eight reasons stated were as follows.

  1. NASCAR: This one REALLY is self explanatory!
  2. Backwoods, Bible-Belt states, where they think this hair style is commendable.
  3. Hicks, rednecks and those who just don’t know any better; fashion ignorance is bliss, somehow.
  4. 80s metal rock has-beens. You know those guys who still think that wearing white-washed jeans is ‘cool.’ Yeah, those people.
  5. ‘Hair Bands’ and those who still think that the styles are really awesome. Need I say more here?
  6. Townships with bad barbers. Believe it or not, there are some places where you may actually be told to sport a mullet. Alabama comes to mind here.
  7. ‘Joe Dirt’ the movie, which really made fun of mullets, but that somehow also made other people aid in supporting the fact that ‘their’ mullet was cool. Wakeup call: The name of the movie is ‘Joe Dirt.’ As in dirty!
  8. ‘The Dukes of Hazard.’ This is as self explanatory as the first reason is.

But, I was watching a TV commercial for Keystone Amber Light – the white trash equivalent to Pabst Blue Ribbon if you ask me – and their spokesperson is this mullet-flaunting fellow named Keith. How appropriate, right? So that made me ever so desire to write a follow-up to this original article. As it seems that even mainstream marketing media is now adapting their demographics to mullet-lovers with a shoddy lager that leaves a resounding taste of stinky foulness in your mouth. (Hint-hint!)

But I digest: Eight more reasons why the Mullet is still around!

  1. Beer commercials—like the aforementioned—that embellish this look and make it seem acceptable to have a mullet. It’s not. You look terrible. Cut your freaking hair!
  2. Monster truck rallies. I think that at these events you may even find more people wearing mullets than you would at a NASCAR event. No really, I do!
  3. Country music festivals. There is this old joke that goes like this: “What has ten teeth and ten thousand legs? The front row at a Garth Brooks concert.” Yeah, that and mullets, too.
  4. Ku Klux Klan memberships. It is just me, or do all racists KKK members enjoy belittling themselves with a mullet? Ignorance is indeed bliss. NOT!
  5. Truck stop, hit-on-the-haggard-waitresses, in-the-middle-of-BFE-places. If you have ever been on really long road trip and had to stop at a place like this, chances are there is a guy from the movie ‘Dumb & Dumber’ with a mullet named ‘Seabass’ that loves to drink boilermakers who will: “Kick your ass!”
  6. Militia groups. First off, these are already people who are mentally on the fritz and think the world will end soon. Does it come as any surprise that mullets are their favored hair style?
  7. Walmart. Need I say anything more here?
  8. And the cake topper: TV championship bass fishing shows. I don’t think I have ever seen so many darned mullets in my life! These good folks really should be fishing for a new hair style!
