Structured Jackets

August 5, 2010 by IamMoody

There are very few pieces of wardrobe that are more forgiving and more useful than the structured jacket. The structured jacket provides lines and movements that help to draw attention away from a trouble area and towards a more flattering area of the body. The structured jacket can help make a casual outfit appear more formal. They often have convenient pockets for those outfits without pockets. They help people a person warm. They provide a canvas for pins and broaches, allowing for a little extra pizzazz to be added to an outfit.

The structured jacket is different than other types of jackets. This jacket has darting and hugs the body. This jacket creates lines, while a regular jacket typically just hangs on the body. The structured jacket is not a thick jacket, but more likely to be worn indoors rather than outdoors. This jacket is more associated with a business casual to formal look rather than the sheer casual look.

When picking out a structured jacket, it is important that the jacket fits properly. The buttons should be able to close comfortably on the jacket. The sleeves should hit at the first knuckle of the thumb when your hands are strait down. A full range of movement may not be possible with the jacket, but some movement should be. If the jacket is pinching or is too tight in the arms, pick up a large size jacket. If the jacket simply will not fit, then move on to a different style jacket or resign yourself to seeing a seamstress after your shopping trip.

Color is important when picking structured jackets. The jacket is not an every day piece and cannot necessarily be thrown in the wash like the rest of the clothing. Pick a jacket that works well with various outfits and styles. The jacket can either be the pop of color or it can be a base/ neutral color. It all depends upon what your wardrobe has more of. The jacket can also help to tie in a different color into the outfit. Avoid jackets that excessively bright or have too much of a pattern. These are big pieces of an outfit and can easily become overwhelming.

Style is also very important. A classic structured jacket will see much more use than a trendy jacket. Avoid buying structured jackets that are ripped or torn, feature large collars or other trendy looks. Instead, buy classic pieces that have a touch of a feminine flair. Do not go overboard with this feminine flair and pick a structured jacket with fake jewels and sequins on it. Pick one with a small flower or a feminine cut that is flattering to the female body and your body in particular.

Once the jacket has been picked, it is easy to pick an outfit to wear with it. Most outfits look great with a structured jacket. A dress can be paired with a structured jacket to make it work appropriate. A pair of jeans can be paired with the structured jacket to make it dressier. This really is a wonderful piece of wardrobe that everyone should own and look into.

Goatees Are Still Very Sexy (Yes Indeed)!

August 5, 2010 by IamMoody

Do you think that goatees are hot? Well many women do, as do the countless men who sport them. Even on the popular fashion blog and website, StyleList, they tagged a recent Getty photo of superstar A-lister, Brad Pitt, sporting his own brand of a goatee. But they were not so nice about what they had to say. And I quote, “While Brad’s skin still looks youthful and supple (and kissable, of course), the gray in his goatee ages his considerably. No skincare product is going to fix that.” (Here’s a link to this tidbit so you can see for yourself.)

Now on to my two cents here!

Okay first off, you don’t use skin care products to get rid of grey in a beard! How moronic is that notion? In fact, the last time I checked, hair dyes were classified as ‘hair care products.’ Also, have you considered that perhaps he does not mind the grey in his goatee? I think he looks refined, aged and sexy, and there is, I can guarantee you with all my pennies, no girl (just about) in the entire world that would ever disagree with me here! So my two cents for you Style List is twofold. One: don’t talk trash about Brad Pitt – he rocks! Two: get your facts straight, don’t mix up hair care and skin care and then expect fashion protagonists such as myself not to call you out and lambast you for it!

If he (Brad Pitt) wanted a dark goatee, he could easily call up one of his plethora of superstar stylists and have it dyed USING HAIR CARE PRODUCTS; NOT SKIN CARE PRODUCTS; as you so coyly suggest. This bantering—which I felt to be absolutely necessary here on so MANY levels—leads me to the point at hand: Goatees are sexy on most men, no matter their age, or if they have some grey in them (HINT-HINT!), and they can really augment and outline your facial features.

I have been rocking a goatee for more than a decade now, and I have always gotten compliments on it! So if you think that goatees are out, think again! Not only that, there is another added perk to these scruffy chin adages: You really cut down on shaving time. For me, I loathe the shaving process, so it’s already win-win over here!

Why Does the Mullet Still Exist?

August 5, 2010 by IamMoody

Living in the great ‘Wild West’ state of Arizona, there are so many fashion faux paws that I see on a regular and daily basis that bewildered is a vast understatement of my perception of this hair style dilemma that most people here face. What I am talking about is the existence of the most trashiest of all hair styles ever to be fathomed, one that had to be brewed in the vats of a moonshine, rusted-out bathtub somewhere far out in the desert—in a trailer park nonetheless—where some dude, somewhere, on some sunny day decided that a mullet was the way to go.

Boy I bet those swanky trailer ladies were all over him! (NOT!) And still, I see a rather startling and alarming abundance of this hideous hair style on many men that inhabit this western state. If you are a guy that is currently sporting a mullet, I am talking about you.

That’s right! Feel free to leave your comments, because in my opinion a mullet is the scalp equivalent to having a rat infestation in your house. It’s just plain awful-looking, and if you think that mullets are super-cool, you are on the wrong website my friends; the site you are looking for is Walmart’s website, where you can happily browse online with fellow mullet enthusiasts.

All that being said, I think here are some top reasons as to why this abomination of a hair style (which really is not a hair style if you ask me) is somehow still around today. Keep in mind this is mostly just for the sake of humor. So if you are unable to handle a good laugh, then you may as well move to France.

Top Eight Reasons Why I Can Derive That the Mullet is Still Around

  1. NASCAR: This one REALLY is self explanatory!
  2. Backwoods, Bible-Belt states, where they think this hair style is commendable.
  3. Hicks, rednecks and those who just don’t know any better; fashion ignorance is bliss, somehow.
  4. 80s metal rock has-beens. You know those guys who still think that wearing white-washed jeans is ‘cool.’ Yeah, those people.
  5. ‘Hair Bands’ and those who still think that the styles are really awesome. Need I say more here?
  6. Townships with bad barbers. Believe it or not, there are some places where you may actually be told to sport a mullet. Alabama comes to mind here.
  7. ‘Joe Dirt’ the movie, which really made fun of mullets, but that somehow also made other people aid in supporting the fact that ‘their’ mullet was cool. Wakeup call: The name of the movie is ‘Joe Dirt.’ As in dirty!
  8. ‘The Dukes of Hazard.’ This is as self explanatory as the first reason is.

Fashion to Fit the Body, Not Fitting the Body to Fashion

August 5, 2010 by IamMoody

I went shopping recently and heard something that shocked me. A young woman was complaining that she hated her body because she could not wear a specific dress. It was either too big, or too small without a good fit between the two sizes. This is an all too common occurrence and one that can wreak havoc on a person’s self-esteem, especially as the emphasis on size numbers and specific fashion outfits increases.

When I was young, I had the same experience. I was looking for a summer dress to wear to a semi-formal. This dress needed to be cute. I found this perfect, cute little dress. It had an empire waist and puffy sleeves, which were all the rage back then. The white and yellow dress, decorated by small daisies was exactly what I wanted in a dress. However, this was simply not to be. No matter what size I tried on, the dress did not fit. I was either too heavy up top, too broad in the shoulders or too big in the bottom.

While I was fussing with this dress and my friends were trying to determine what we could do about this, a woman came up behind be and told me not to worry about it. She informed me that I simply did not have the right shape for that dress. It was not designed for me. She said one important thing that I am now going share with you. “Change the dress, not the body. Make the clothing fit you, not you fit the clothing.”

Turned out she knew something about dresses and the perfect fit. I was lucky that day and met the designer of that dress. She was in to discuss a line of clothing that she was looking to design. I cannot remember her name, but she set me on a fashion course that I am proud to say focuses on the person, not the clothing first.

While there are a lot of great hints and fashions on the market right now, it is important to not become frustrated if an outfit does not look good on you or does not fit you. It is important to remember that you are beautiful as you are and that fashion is about how you feel, not what the name brand is. This being said, paying attention to fashion can have its benefits. Fashion blogs like this one can help you to find outfits that look good on people and may help you to find an outfit that is geared specifically to you. Great looking clothing does change the way people perceive a person and this perception can make you feel good or feel bad about yourself.

As to that semi-formal, the designer assisted me and my friends in finding the perfect dresses. They were not in her line, not her products, but that did not seem to matter to her. She was just happy that we looked and felt beautiful. She was a truly wonderful woman who has made a huge impression on my life. I wish I would have remembered her name, but I will never forget her lessons.

Adding Flare with ‘Bed Hair’

August 5, 2010 by IamMoody

I aim to keep this article short and sweet, because I don’t wish to bore you to tears with my fomenting and bantering on about hair styles 101. However, there are some interesting things that I have been learning lately, with regards to my hair and the nifty hair style I am always shooting for on a daily basis that has really made me wonder. I also have deemed one of these things as a really cool tip that should work for most hair types and hairs styles, or for that matter, most people.

I am not sure about any of you other people out there, but I swear by my flatiron – it is my must-have for getting ready to go out. But one thing that has always been of a real nuisance is trying to get rid of the frizz and the frazzle after taking a shower and blow drying my hair, applying thermal protector and anti-frizz to it, and then embarking upon the arduous task of straightening my wavy hair using my flatiron. (Whew that was a mouthful!) But I devised one trick over the past few months of this back and forth struggle between my hair I, and I think it is the fashion hairstyle battle plan for me.

I started showering at night instead of in the mornings. I have ditched my hair dryer and started towel drying my hair and letting the rest dry naturally. Later on, when my hair is entirely dry, I run some thermal protector through it and then add a dash of anti-frizz. Finally, I flatiron that hair exactly as I want it to look. Then I hit the hay. Upon waking up—and keep in mind that I have been conducting this experiment for over two months now, and much to my satisfaction mind you—my hair is naturally styled in ways that I could never get it to look or shape, or form on my own.

Case and point: sometimes ‘bed hair’ really does add that extra touch of flare. At least for me it does. You should try it out for yourself. It may just make all of the difference for your hair style too!

School Wardrobe Hints

August 5, 2010 by IamMoody

The school year is almost here for college and grade schools. This means it is time for shopping! Not only are there school supplies that need to be purchased, but there is also the school year wardrobe. Unless your or your child’s school has a uniform policy, there are some things you have to consider when picking out clothing for the school year. These items include what is fashionable and what is appropriate.

The school setting is designed to be conducive to the education of the child. While there will always be an emphasis on socialization by the students, education is the primary focus of the schools. This is especially true for colleges when the average student is accruing more debt than they will know what to do with.

As mentioned before, clothing can help to make the person. It puts a person in a specific state of mind and gives other people an opinion as to what that person is placing as a priority. A prudent school wardrobe keeps this in mind. The clothing should be more professional than the average outfit that the child might run around town in. This outfit does not have to be a miniature suit, but it should not be sweat pants or the horrid pajama bottoms.

When looking for a good school wardrobe, no matter if the child is in 5th grade or if the individual is applying for his doctorate in college, remember where the clothing is going to be worn. Buy button down shirts or polo shirts for boys. Limit the jeans that are going to be worn. Skirts should hit just above the knee or lower. Blouses should be thick enough to hide the bra. Nothing should be overly revealing or flashy, since this is a school environment. Shoes should be comfortable but not sneakers.

Accessories are another thing to think about when buying a school wardrobe. Remember, the accessories are to help make the outfit, but not to serve as toys during a boring lecture. Limit the number of accessories worn in the classroom. Pieces that have special meaning are more than welcome to remain on the child, but sparkly bracelets for the student to play with, or wallet chains to attract attention with are not acceptable in the school environment.

Keeping these rules in mind can help to steer a young child onto a lifetime of learning and fashion success. Keeping these guidelines in mind as a college student can help the student build contacts and be taken seriously by his teachers. This can help a student find a job easier once the degree has been completed. It will also prepare the students for the real world where this style of dress is expected in the office as well.
